PHENOMIX’ SCIENTIFIC FOUNDER, CHRISTOPHER GOODNOW, AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FROM AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT

San Diego, CA, June 10, 2005 — Phenomix Corporation, a drug discovery and development company, announced today that Christopher Goodnow, Ph.D., a scientific founder of the company and its chief scientific officer, has been awarded the Commonwealth Health Minister’s Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research for his renowned research in molecular genetics at The Australian National University where he is also a professor and director of the Australian Phenomics Facility. Dr. Goodnow’s research in functional genomics provides insight into gene function and paves the way for discovering drugs to target dysfunction of the immune system.

Dr. Goodnow was instrumental in the pioneering success of the Medical Genome Centre, which ultimately led to the award of an Australian Government Major National Research Facility grant and is also home to the Phenomix operations in Canberra, Australia.

"All of us at Phenomix congratulate Chris on receiving this much deserved recognition of his significant contributions to health and medical research," said Laura K. Shawver, Ph.D., chief executive officer and president of Phenomix. "Our company was founded on an unparalleled technology that provides key biological information at every stage of drug development. Chris is a leading contributor to this technology, which Phenomix has developed to advance an internal therapeutic pipeline for metabolic syndrome and immune disease."

The Commonwealth Health Minister’s Award for Excellence recognizes outstanding individual achievement in health and medical research in Australia. Now in its sixth year, the award is given each year to a single recipient and consists of national recognition and a $50,000 award.
